Food in Penang is renowned as much as it is everywhere. The ‘food paradise’ had always been its main attraction here. One would be able to find food almost anywhere in around the island, and there are certain place to go for certain food. Most of the great food here have since been ‘exported’ to other parts of the country and although most would go with the title of ‘Penang’ as its origin, nothing beats tasting the real authentic recipe at the state.

The Penang Hokkien Mee is one of the classics here. This is essentially noodles boiled in pork and prawn soup that includes boiled egg, bean sprouts and shallots. The other classic would be the Penang Char Keow Teow which is typically fried rice noodles. Usually cooked with bean sprouts, cockles and eggs, one of the most famous one here in Penang usually come with minced crab meat as well. A variation of the rice noodle would be the Koay Teow Thng. This is typically rice noodle with clear chicken soup. Accompanied with fish cake, pork and chicken strips, this is a very much demanded dish that is aromatic especially from the soup by which it is stewed. The Asam Laksa is essentially soup with noodle that is cooked with Tamarind, vegetables and chili.

The Penang Lobak is a snack type of dish. It consists of a mix of fried stuff usually using meat and vegetables combination, one would pick and choose what they fancy and it will be deep fried to be eaten with dipping. One could also try out the snacks from Penang. First off would be the Cendol, which is blended ice with brown sugar, red beans and a type of green jelly all mixed within some coconut milk. This is a great beverage and is a must try for any visiting tourist to Penang. Nutmeg strips are also sold in different variations and are common snacks among the Penangites. The Penang biscuits are also very much sought after from people all over the country. Some would visit Penang just to purchase the biscuits here like the Tambun Pneah, Heong Pneah, Beh Teh Sor and the Tau Sar Pneah. Famous brands here are the two most sought after ones in Ghee Hiang and Him Heang.
Other types of famous food in Penang include the Penang Rojak, the Satay here and also their seafood which can be found in most restaurants along the coast as one move from Georgetown toward Batu Feringghi.
