Located at the northern part of the Peninsular Malaysia, Kedah is a state that is known as the ‘rice bowl’ of the country. It is famous for its rice produce due to its flat land with neighbours Perlis at the north, Perak and Penang at the south and Kelantan over at the east.

Its royal seat is located at the capital of Alor Star. Kedah Darul Aman which means Abode of Peace is further segregated to 12 districts like Bandar Baharu, Pokok Sena, Baling, Kubang Pasu, Kuala Kuda, Pendang, Yan, Langkawi, Kota Setar, Kulim, Sik and Padang Terap. It is populated with more than 1.7 million people of which the Malays make up the most while other races like Chinese, Indians and others make up the rest.

Historically, the state is ruled by the Kedah Sultanate, which started in around the year 1136 by the 9th Kedah Maharaja Derbar Raja, who after conversion to Islam, bear the name of Sultan Muzaffar Shah. After that, there were subsequent 27 rulers that ruled the state ever since.

Known for its rice produce, the state contributes to one third of the total rice in the country. Apart from that, Kedah too produces tobacco, oil palm and rubber while Tourism is mainly centralised around Langkawi Island.

The capital of Alor Stra is the biggest city in the state while other cities like Kulim houses its own hi-tech industrial park. Sungai Petani, its second largest city is also an industrial city for the state. While Alor Star, Sungai Petani is a slower paced city. Other districts here include Pedu, which hosts its own man make lake in Lake Pedu. Langkawi is one of the most visited tourist destination in the country while Bukit Kayu Hitam is the main entry to get to Thailand from Malaysia. one could also cross over through Changloon town.

While English is mostly spoken at most places around Kedah, it keeps its own Malay-Kedahan dialect. Kedah is typically a very traditional state by which one can easily locate a lot of cultural events and craft as well.
